Seattle Lookbook Photography, Model Test Emily

My goal for this year is to work on a couple of LOOKBOOKS for designers, whether it’s for an up and coming talent, or a shop// boutique // clothing line, such as my favorite, [Aritzia]. I’m trying to keep my studio work fresh, simple and focused on movement, and the clothes. I’m working on some new personal projects (i.e. portfolio work) through this summer. If you feel you have killer style and/or are SUPER comfortable being in front of the camera, feel free to submit to us via our [EMAIL] with subject (SUBMISSION). I remember reading [Melissa Rodwell's] post about [Getting Screwed by Flaunt Magazine] last year, and I applaud her for having the guts to share such a true story in all it’s raw detail. Melissa is someone I look up to and deeply admire, and am thankful for her insight into such a fickle (yet fascinating) industry.

I am here to share with you an editorial I worked on in August of 2009. No that is not a typo. I want to share a similar experience to Melissa’s and tell you that this type of thing happens a LOT in this industry. Fashion is subjective. One minute, one person may totally dig you, the next minute you’re old news. We shot this piece as a Fall/Winter 09/10 editorial and submitted it to a particular magazine. They immediately picked it up, and we anxiously awaited the issue release. The January issue came and went, and I was told it would be printed in the April issue instead. April came and went – with no issue at all, but I was told it was coming out in May. Fast forward to last week, and the issue was finally released – but no images. It’s sad but true, and at this point in the game this piece is already “out-dated”. It will be FANTASTIC portfolio material, but as I’ve learned early in the game, nothing is “published” until I’m holding the magazine in my hands and looking at my images in print. It’s just the way this industry works, and I’m glad to have had such a great learning experience early in my career.

Alas, I hope you enjoy these images we shot on a rainy midnight last summer. Dawn Tunnell came up with the initial concept, and it was fun to put together the shoot with her and Rebecca Luke. It was definitely a step out of my “normal” style, but I’m still decently pleased with the results. Enjoy!

(Just a note to female photographers and teams, I HIGHLY recommend hiring an assistant/bodyguard for night shoots and/or less than ideal locations. We were very thankful to have some “man power” along with us on this shoot! Safety ALWAYS comes first!!)

I had a TOTAL blast working with Gracie, and creating a really fun and diverse model portfolio for her! I can’t believe how adorable kids clothing is, and how easy it was to work with such a great girl!! Seattle Beauty Editorial, “Fall Into Spring” Spring 2010

I’m really excited to finally share my favorite images from another Spring Beauty editorial we shot a few months ago. This concept has literally been at least two years in the making (Jenny can totally vouch for that!). I’ve wanted to do this shoot for SO LONG, but the timing has never been quite right. It turns out, waiting for 2010 was on par, since WHITE is back for Spring this year. It was hours of setting up the AstroTurf walls (I think we had 3, 10′x12′ corners to be exact), but I totally loved the effect it created. I was also just coming back from the [Melissa Rodwell] workshop, which was perfect for applying the right lighting techniques I needed to nail this shoot. All in all, I am very happy with the outcome of this shoot. It took on many different forms over the years as I worked down the final details, but it came out just right.

Seattle Fashion Photographer, “Gypsy Dancer” Fall 2009 Editorial

Man, it’s taken me AGES to work on this shoot, but finally I have the final pieces put together and ready to share with you! Rosie and I worked for a while prepping the shoot, scouting locations, and getting the concept down solid. After nailing down a date for our shoot, weather goddess, Jenny, informed us that it was going to start raining, right when we were supposed to start shooting the next day. I quickly called everyone and bumped the call time up a few hours, so to avoid the showers. Unfortunately we still got rained on, but it wasn’t until the second half of the shoot. Even though it was cold and wet, we worked with the weather, and I really loved the chance to be able to incorporate it into the last two looks. In the end it was actually perfect, because we wanted a foggy, dream-like atmosphere for the shoot. I hope you enjoy a little taste of something a little different than my typical fashion editorial. A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of working with Portland Make-up Artist [Amy Gillespie]. We’ve been trying to cross paths for a few years now, and I was thrilled at the chance to work with her while she was in Seattle last month. We put together a (Spring 2010 Beauty Lookbook) editorial that emulates our favorite color trends for this year. I’m totally in love with beige/neutral tones, and pairing it with pinks & blues gave it the “spring” feeling I was hoping to create. I’ve been working on some new lighting techniques, and had fun lighting the model, accessories, and fog in fun ways!

Seattle Fashion Photographer, SMG Petite Model Susan

Susan kicks off our first studio shoot of 2010. She is a Petite model with [SMG] and needed fresh images for her portfolio. We took her through a variety of commercial looks and outfits that would show her range as a Petite model. I love working with Petite models because it’s all about the SHOES (and looking gorgeous of course)! Susan was fabulous and a complete joy to work with!
