Last month (on the first hottest day of the year I think) we did a small studio shoot for [DLIST Magazine]. It’s so fun and exciting to see your work in print! Erin is a GORGEOUS model I have worked with before (years ago when I was new to shooting models, and Erin was just starting out) – so it was fun to come full circle with her. We had a great day, and I’m so excited to share the finished results!

You can pick up a copy of the magazine for FREE at tons of locations around Seattle. PLUS they just launched their Portland issue so you can grab a copy of the magazine down south as well!! (The image is in both issues – double win!!)

I’m sharing the original image as well – so you can see the importance of shooting with LOTS of space for print. Always make sure you understand the layout of what you are shooting for before you get started. In this case I knew we wanted the model off-centered to accompany a short article on the left-hand side. Plus, with cropping for print you’re going to lose a lot of image on the top and bottom, so you’ll need to make sure your subject can “breathe” in the frame. Shooting for editorial is a LOT different than portrait work because your images WILL be cropped and manipulated – versus shooting straight out of the camera.

Make sure and grab a copy – the article is all about embracing your beauty – at any size. A topic I am always focused on teaching my senior clients!!

Let me know if you have any questions!!

XOXO

PS, make sure and check out [Erin's Gulf Recovery] project. Erin is very passionate about helping the gulf and is raising money for a trip to go down there later this year! Just because the leak may be stopped – doesn’t mean there isn’t LOTS more hard work ahead. She’s really a gem – and her cause is one I FULLY support!

There’s no new [Photographer Q&A] today, because I’ve been working all week on a new article for the [X-Equals Blog] about [Composition]. I’m really excited to share this article with you all, because I had such a fun time writing it! At first I was a bit unsure how to approach such a broad topic, but I aimed to narrow it down to a digestible amount of information. I looked at Composition from a Modern viewpoint – and how to work it into your portrait work.

Check out my article [Composition - A Modern Twist] and leave any questions or comments you may have over there. I hope you enjoy!!

I also wanted to mention one additional point I forgot to touch base on in the main article, and that is Practicing your Weaknesses. It’s a really great idea to study the composition in your own work, and take note of what your “default” composition is. My habit is to take far too many vertical shots, and not enough horizontal ones. The last few months I’ve been really trying to focus especially on getting more variety when it comes to horizontal images. For me, that is my weakness, and so I have been practicing it more and more lately.

It’s always a good idea to expand your composition repertoire, so next time you are out shooting, try to take a leap (or three!) by working on your weak spot.

I hope you enjoy the article!! Thank you so much for reading!

I had the privilege to attend her November [Workshop] in LA. The workshop was loads of fun, and 2 full days of soaking up information like a SPONGE. Coming back and starting 2010 with a fresh perspective has really given me a kick of confidence in the studio. I decided last minute to submit a shot from a recent shoot to Melissa’s [Shot of the Week] feature. This is my FOURTH time submitting and my SECOND time being picked! I’m SUPER excited!! I LOVE hearing from Melissa, and getting a bit of feedback on my work. Her blog is a fashion staple, so make sure to add it to your daily blog reading!
